STATEMENT

As an artist I have an innate love for drawing, and find its expression in the areas of printmaking and animation. Themes of landscape, its connection to colonialism and industrial development permeate my works on paper. Mountains are depicted in a laborious yet spontaneous method to exude a physicality and expansiveness felt psychically by the viewer. I invoke the history of landscape art and investigate the history of land as sites of culture in flux, broaching issues such as idealization, scarcity, and spirituality. My personal background and indigenous heritage inform my work and worldview. I wish to expose the powerful human forces acting on the land, to convey the mediated nature of our relationship with the environment and ecology. Recent work renders imaginary spaces in deep perspective, loosely based on an actual experience of place. In my practice, I tap into the duality of the experience of nature: to affect at once a dreamy solace, but with it a bright awareness toward reality in the present moment.
